Description Description The Max-Born Institute invites applications for a PhD student (f/m/d) for the joint German-French project “FEMTO-switch” on ultrafast dynamics of photoswitches funded jointly by DFG and ANR. The main objective of FEMTO-switch is to establish rational grounds as to how the chemical structure of ultrafast photo-switches controls the molecular energetics and excited state dynamics of ultrafast photo-switches at the conical intersections. To this end, we will employ femtosecond UV/VIS/NIR and photoelectron spectroscopy (fs-PES) in the liquid phase, coupled to quantum chemistry calculations. The advertised position is for the experimental research using femtosecond photoelectron spectoscopy in liquids. Project objectives: Development of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) in the liquid phase with UV pump and XUV probe in application to samples of biomimetic chromophores at low concentrations. Investigation of oxindole-based and oxopyrrole based chromophores. Expected results: Improved sensitivity and stability of TRPES for different solvents and solutes of low solubility. Experimental protocols for biomimetic samples. Experimental and theoretical investigation of oxindole switches (in collaboration with project partners). Dynamics of novel biomimetic switches developed in FEMTO-switch. Techniques to be used: Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in liquid phase using femtosecond XUV pulses Requirements: We are seeking highly motivated, talented, and excellent candidates for this position. Applicants must hold a Master’s or Diploma degree in chemistry or physics, with good knowledge in femtosecond molecular dynamics and ultrafast laser physics. Prior experience in ultrafast spectroscopy would be an advantage. Very good verbal and written communications skills in English are required. Our offer: The position is available immediately for 3 years. The payment will be according to the German TVöD salary scheme for scientists in public research institutions (part-time 75% for PhD students). The MBI promotes an equity-based workplace and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. If equally qualified, applicants with a disability will be given preference (Schwerbehinderung nach Sozialgesetzbuch IX). The MBI supports the reconcilability of family and working life and is certified by the audit workandfamily (audit berufundfamilie) as family-friendly. MBI is committed to a diverse, prejudice-aware working environment. The MBI follows the “Charta of Diversity” (Charta der Vielfalt) and implements the Diversity and Inclusion strategy as set up by the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.. Please upload your application, including cover letter (specifying why you are interested in the position), curriculum vitae, certificates and description of previous professional activities electronically via the MBI online recruiting platform at https://mbi-berlin.de/career . Official supervision will be given by Dr. Oleg Kornilov at MBI with affiliation to the physics department of Freie Universität Berlin. The advertisement is open with immediate effect and will remain open until November 8, 2026. For further information about the project, please contact Oleg Kornilov ( kornilov at mbi-berlin. de ).
