The LIGHTinPARIS programme has launched its 3rd call for PhD Fellowships with up to 6 fully funded positions starting on 1 January 2027 . The PhD projects on offer fall in the domain of the Institute for Sciences of Light (Université Paris-Saclay) covering photonics, optics, imaging, materials (chemistry), lasers, instrumentation, information, quantum technologies and more. The programme is cofunded by the European Union under Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) COFUND call  and co-financed by Université Paris-Saclay and two non-academic partners IMAGINE OPTIC and ONERA. This is an announcement for one of the 10 PhD projects on offer. (Refer to https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/449366 for the global announcement.) SYNOX : Symmetry-Driven Nonlinear Optics in Hexagonal Polytype Semiconductors (Description on Web page and PDF ) This project explores crystal-phase control to engineer material properties and unlock new functionalities. Building on a patented breakthrough enabling the growth of metastable hexagonal semiconductor thin films, we will investigate their nonlinear optical behaviour. The anisotropic hexagonal symmetry is expected to provide strong χ(2) and intrinsic birefringence, enhancing SHG and SPDC for applications in frequency conversion, optical modulation, sensing and quantum photonics. As a first demonstrator, the SYNOX project aims to develop disruptive sources of correlated photon pairs via SPDC in subwavelength AlGaAs-hex films, a key enabler for secure quantum communication. Our vision is to design and integrate miniaturized nonlinear optical devices, paving the way toward fully integrated and scalable on-chip quantum light sources for practical quantum technologies. Keywords: Information and Communication Technologies (optoelectronics); Quantum technologies; Nanophotonics (metamaterials, surfaces and interfaces);Materials (inorganic semiconductor);Metastable crystal phase, polytypism;Thin layer epitaxy; Nonlinear optics; Secondary harmonic generation, spontaneous parametric down conversion and entangled photons PI/Thesis Supervisor and team : Charles RENARD at the SEEDs/Dept Matériaux team in C2N LAB laboratory / Centre and Laëtitia VINCENT at Every LIGHTinPARIS PhD project includes a “ 3i ” dimension (interdisciplinary, intersectoral, or international collaboration) and all fellows will benefit from secondment opportunities for 2 to 12 months at the 3i partner lab under the supervision of the "3i" co-supervisor. 3i dimension(s) for project SYNOX: international 12 months at ETH Zurich - Switzerland and interdisciplinary at CEMES, Toulouse - France APPLICATION PROCESS - Guide for Applicants • Applications must be submitted electronically via the LIGHTinPARIS application portal . • Deadline for applications: 21 September 2026 12:00 noon Paris time (UTC + 2) • Deadline to start an application (registration on portal): 15 September 2026 12:00 noon Paris time (UTC + 2)
