Development of an ultra-high resolution multimodality imaging system. We are seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious PhD student to work on a project investigating therapy approaches in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) disease models. The PhD position is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network PANDORA on discovering Pathomechanisms and Novel Drug Optimization for AMD. The PhD student will focus on advancing resolution, sensitivity and adaptability capabilities of the hybrid microscope already operating at our premises utilizing the proprietary wavefront shaping technology (Wavelens®) allowing precision illumination control in all modalities (Optoacoustic microscopy OAM, two-photon excitation fluorescence TPEF, Second Harmonic Generation SHG and Raman). The aim is to advance the imaging capabilities of a multiparametric, multimodality microscope, by design and integration of the Wavelens system for precision illumination control, achieving sub-diffraction resolution in all modalities. This optical development work will directly support a parallel research effort in the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH) investigating multiple AMD diagnostics and therapeutic approaches. AMD is the most common cause of blindness in the elderly population and its pathological mechanisms are complex and not fully understood. The project aims to test multiple therapies including complement inhibition, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory drugs and mitochondria modulators. The results will help design diagnostic paradigms and therapeutic approaches. The PhD candidate will benefit from a network of European experts in different fields (gene therapy, pharmacology, bioinformatics, disease modeling, imaging) and will have the possibility to visit other labs in secondments (lab exchanges). The doctoral candidate will utilize: • Full integration of Wavelens digital lens onto the multimodality microscope allowing for precision illumination control in all modalities (Optoacoustic microscopy OAM, two-photon excitation fluorescence TPEF, Second Harmonic Generation SHG and Raman). • Achievement of sub-diffraction resolution in tissues. • Performance validation in live imaging of AMD molecular biomarkers.
