MERIT (MEtabolic Reprogramming in viral pathogenesis: from Infection to Therapeutic innovations) is an EU-funded MSCA training programme aimed at better understanding how viruses affect the human body. Coordinated by Dr. Adithya Sridhar, Assistant Professor, and Prof. Dr. Dasja Pajkrt, Professor of Pediatric Infectious diseases, from the OrganoVIR Labs at Amsterdam UMC (location AMC), this project brings together 7 academic institutions and 12 associated partners from across Europe. Within MERIT, researchers will take a new, holistic approach that focuses on infections and host metabolism to unravel virus-induced metabolic reprogramming and its impact on human health. The project’s objective lies in understanding the complex interplay between viruses and host cells, focusing on metabolic reprogramming, and long-term consequences of infection. This will be achieved by combining three methodological pillars: human organoids, integrative and spatial omics, and advanced microscopy. Alphaviruses, including chikungunya virus (CHIKV), can cause acute disease and often persistent, debilitating musculoskeletal symptoms, yet no specific antiviral therapies are available. These viruses reprogram host-cell metabolism to support replication while disrupting immune and inflammatory responses. This doctoral project will combine human iPSC-derived models, multi-omics, metabolic modelling, advanced imaging, and organoids to define alphavirus-induced immunometabolic changes and identify novel host-directed therapies. At the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, MERIT is looking for a highly motivated doctoral candidate (DC) to investigate how alphavirus infection reshapes cellular metabolism and immune responses and determine whether these changes can be therapeutically exploited. As DC12, your objectives are to: • Define the temporal immunopathogenesis of alphavirus infection in iPSC-derived macrophages, identifying dynamic changes in cellular metabolism, antiviral responses, and inflammatory signaling during infection. • Identify actionable host-directed therapeutic targets by integrating experimental multi-omics data with computational and genome-scale metabolic modelling approaches. • Validate prioritized therapeutic targets in human neuronal organoid models, evaluating their potential to restrict viral infection and protect tissue function.

The project will provide training at the interface of virology, immunometabolism, stem-cell biology, organoid technology, systems biology, advanced microscopy and computational modelling. The doctoral candidate will be supervised at Karolinska Institutet by Dr. Ujjwal Neogi and Dr. Iva Filipovic. Planned secondments include advanced and super-resolution microscopy with Prof. Balpreet Singh Ahluwalia (UiO University of Oslo, Norway) and human neuronal organoid models with Dr. Adithya Sridhar (Amsterdam UMC, Netherlands). In addition, the candidate will participate in MERIT-wide scientific meetings, workshops, transferable skills training and networking activities, providing exposure to complementary academic and translational research environments. You can apply for this position until 30 October 2026 . Applications submitted after this date will not be considered. Please note: You must submit your application through both the MERIT website and the Karolinska Institutet’s website . Your application will only be considered complete once both submissions have been made.
