This is what the University of Münster stands for as one of the strongest research-oriented universities in Germany and one of the largest employers in the region. Every day, over 7,000 employees devote themselves to cutting-edge research and excellent teaching. We share more than a workplace. We share the desire to make a real impact – regionally and internationally. Our day-to-day work is distinguished by diversity, openness and space to pursue one’s ideas. Become a part of our team – in academia, a technical or manual trade, or administration.
The Department for Quantum Technology in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a
Doctoral Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in, salary level E 13 TV-L 67%)
in the area of Graph States, Entanglement and Quantum Computation within an externally funded research project supported by the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF), at the earliest possible date. We are offering a fixed-term position for three years.
Your tasks:
• Conduct research in quantum information theory, with a particular focus on multipartite entanglement, graph states, and quantum computation.
• Develop analytical and numerical methods for the study and characterization of multipartite entanglement and graph states
• Investigate the structure and properties of multipartite entanglement and its applications in quantum information processing.
• Study efficient methods for the generation and manipulation of graph states, including photonic graph-state architectures.
• Perform analytical calculations and numerical simulations in quantum information theory.
• Publish research results in international scientific journals and present them at conferences and workshops.
• Collaborate with researchers at the University of Münster and Tel Aviv University through regular meetings and funded research visits.
• The position is associated with the completion of a doctoral research project (PhD).
Our expectations:
• A Master's degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics, or a closely related field is required by the start date of the position.
• A strong background in quantum information theory is required.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
• Team-oriented working style.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Scientific writing and presentation skills.
The following qualifications are desirable:
• Knowledge of multipartite entanglement theory, graph states, stabilizer formalisms, or quantum computation.
• Experience with analytical calculations and numerical simulations (e.g., Python, Julia, Mathematica, MATLAB, or similar).
• Previous research experience in quantum information science (e.g., through a Master’s thesis or research project) is desirable.
• Experience working in collaborative research projects or international research environments.
Advantages for you:
• Participation in a Germany–Israel collaborative research project funded by the German Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF)
• Opportunities to collaborate with researchers at the University of Münster, Tel Aviv University, and other international research institutions.
• Funding is available for international research visits, conference participation, and scientific exchange activities.
• Opportunities to publish in leading international journals and present research at international conferences and workshops
• A stimulating international research environment at the University of Münster.
• Appreciation, commitment, openness and respect – values which are important to us.
• Our broad range of diverse work-time models offers great flexibility – also when working from home.
• If you have family members or young children in your care, our Family Service Office offers concrete support to help you balance your private and professional responsibilities.
• As an educational institution, we are deeply committed to offering occupational training and continuing education opportunities tailored to your individual needs.
• From A – Z, Aikido to Zumba, our sport and health programmes ensure a healthy work-life balance.
• As a university employee, you are entitled to numerous benefits afforded to public servants, e.g. an attractive company pension scheme ( VBL ), an annual end-of-year bonus and a position that is shielded from economic fluctuations.
The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity . We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions.
We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.
Have we piqued your interest? Then we look forward to receiving your application by 30.09.2026 via our online application form, including:
• a cover letter describing your motivation and research interests,
• a curriculum vitae,
