About the project
Controlling how tiny structures scatter light is one of nanophotonics’ most exciting challenges. This project will investigate optical nanoantennas whose shape and interactions determine the direction and strength of scattered radiation. You'll design, fabricate and test individual nanoantennas and coupled arrays, advancing nanoscale light control for emerging photonic technologies.
Nanophotonics is transforming how we generate, manipulate and direct light on scales far smaller than its wavelength. At the heart of this field are optical nanoantennas: tiny structures that scatter incoming light in patterns determined by their shape, material and arrangement. Yet controlling precisely where this light goes, and how much power is directed in each direction, remains a major scientific challenge.
This project will investigate new ways to engineer light scattering using individual nanoantennas and arrays of interacting nanoantennas. You'll design structures with unconventional geometries, explore how their optical interactions shape the scattered field, and fabricate and experimentally characterise promising designs. The goal is to achieve unprecedented control over light at the nanoscale, opening opportunities in optical sensing, imaging and photonic devices. You'll join the Multimode Photonics Group at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), combining theoretical modelling, numerical simulations and hands-on experiments. You'll gain experience in advanced optical laboratories and state-of-the-art nanofabrication cleanrooms, with access to high-performance computing resources.
The project involves collaborations with the University of Brescia in Italy and the Australian National University, with opportunities for research visits. You'll benefit from structured training during your first year, daily interaction with leading photonics researchers, and opportunities to engage with industrial partners. You'll also be encouraged to publish your findings in scientific journals and present your research at major international conferences. This combination of scientific and practical skills will prepare you for rewarding research careers in academia or the photonics industry.
The School of Optoelectronics (ORC) is committed to promoting equality, diversity inclusivity as demonstrated by our Athena SWAN award. We welcome all applicants regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or age, and will give full consideration to applicants seeking flexible working patterns and those who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy, onsite childcare facilities, and offers a range of benefits to help ensure employees’ well-being and work-life balance. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.
