About the project
The quantum Zeno effect suggests repeated measurements can slow a system’s evolution. Could this be tested with a levitated nanoparticle? You will develop and calibrate measurements, model their effects on motion, and investigate how measurement changes its state. This project probes how measurement shapes quantum behaviour near the classical boundary.
Can repeated measurements hold a quantum system still? The quantum Zeno effect predicts that frequent measurement can inhibit a system’s evolution. This project will investigate the effect using a levitated nanoparticle, a mechanical system whose motion can be controlled and measured with light.
You will work with Southampton’s non-cavity optical tweezer platform, which uses parabolic mirrors to trap and collect light from a nanoparticle and feedback cooling to prepare its motion near the ground state. The challenge is to develop the complete measurement needed for a convincing test: identifying both measurement outcomes and determining how each changes the nanoparticle’s state.
You will improve and calibrate optical detection, model realistic effects such as optical loss, heating and imperfect control, then carry out repeated-measurement experiments. Results will be compared with matched controls to distinguish genuine Zeno dynamics from technical disturbance or simple state resetting.
The project aims to deliver a validated measurement protocol, an experimentally grounded model, reusable control and analysis software, and survival statistics that establish how closely the experiment can test quantum predictions. This work addresses a fundamental question: how does measurement shape the transition between quantum and classical behaviour in a massive object?
The project combines hands-on experimental physics with quantum measurement theory and modelling, supervised by Southampton.
The School of Physics and Astronomy is committed to promoting equality, diversity inclusivity as demonstrated by our Athena SWAN award. We welcome all applicants regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or age, and will give full consideration to applicants seeking flexible working patterns and those who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy, onsite childcare facilities, and offers a range of benefits to help ensure employees’ well-being and work-life balance. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.

Research interests
• Hendrik's main research interests concern experimental tests of fundamental theories of Nature by table-top experiments but also in space. Some tests are concerned with the large mass limit of the quantum superposition principle, which forms the basis of quantum mechanics. Other experiments are concerned with testing the interplay between quantum mechanics and gravitation in the low energy limit.
• The Ulbricht group performs quantum experimental research on the preparation and analysis of massive systems in non-classical states by various techniques. They pioneer so-called levitated opto- and magneto-mechanics experiments, where light and magnetic fields are used to both trap and control nano- and micro-particles in vacuum. Please see the Ulbricht group webpages for more details.
