About the project

Geometric diodes are electronic components with a non-linear current-voltage characteristics which is caused by an asymmetric geometric restriction. The PhD project investigates experimentally the performance of such diodes based-on 2D materials such as Graphene and MoS2, fabricated by you on our state-of-the art e-beam lithography systems in the cleanrooms at the University of Southampton.

This project will explore the unique physics and fabrication challenges of geometric diodes.

As part of the recently awarded EPSRC Programme Grant EXPRESS - exploiting single source precursors for the electrochemical growth of functional 1D and 2D metal dichalcogenide semiconductors- we will deliver a step-change in the level of control and the mechanistic understanding of electrochemical transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) growth by combining atomic-scale characterisation, theory, precursor development, and functional characterisation.

In the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) we will design and develop the relevant device architectures in which to integrate the electro-deposited TMDCs to enable evaluation of key electronic properties and to create novel device structures and functionality. The PhD studentship is awarded as part of this Programme.

Geometric diodes are electronic components with a non-linear current-voltage characteristics which is caused by an asymmetric geometric restriction. Such diodes might play an important role in future high-density memory, radio-frequency energy harvesting, and integrated circuits. For high-quality geometric diodes the physical restriction needs to be much smaller than the mean free path of the electronic carrier.

This project investigates experimentally the performance of geometric diodes based-on 2D materials such as Graphene and MoS2, fabricated by you on our advanced e-beam lithography systems in the Cleanrooms at the University.

The Sustainable Electronic Technologies group (SET) in ECS leads in research and education activities covering a broad range of topics on energy harvesting, electronic material, devices, and circuits. You will join a vibrant and collaborative research environment with access to advanced clean-room facilities, device fabrication tools and innovative electrical characterisation laboratories. The project also offers interdisciplinary training, collaboration with researchers across the EXPRESS consortium, and opportunities to present research at international conferences and engage with academic and industrial partners.

The School of Electronics and Computer Science is committed to promoting equality, diversity inclusivity as demonstrated by our Athena SWAN award. We welcome all applicants regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or age, and will give full consideration to applicants seeking flexible working patterns and those who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy, onsite childcare facilities, and offers a range of benefits to help ensure employees’ well-being and work-life balance. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.
