About the project
This project aims to use high speeds video footage and DIC of curved fronted water jet impingements to understand the stress waves induced, the evolution of damage and erosion of PMMA, PU coatings, novel erosion resistant polymers (Exeter) and nano structured NiCo alloy shields. It would use microCT for identifying subsurface damage mechanisms to inform modelling and the physics to be used. The project would also instrument an existing rig to measure impact loads.
Rain droplet erosion of leading edges a growing concern for aero engine fan blades , helicopter blades and wind turbine blades. Although protection systems are available, they are not designed from understanding of the physics involved in rain droplet erosion and therefore can fail prematurely. Roughening or loss of protection coatings on leading edges causes loss of energy capture or thrust and thus reduces efficiency.
This project aims to use high speeds video footage and DIC of curved fronted water jet impingements to understand the stress waves induced, the evolution of damage and erosion of PMMA, PU coatings, novel erosion resistant polymers (Exeter) and nano structured NiCo alloy shields.
