About the workplace The vision of University of Gävle is to be the first choice for all who want to make a difference. We offer around 60 study programmes and 330 freestanding courses in the fields of the humanities, health care and medicine, social and natural sciences and technology. University of Gävle is one of the most popular university colleges in Sweden (applicants per place). We have around 19 000 students, 750 employees, and our campus is concentrated in space in beautiful surroundings.
The university focuses on four strategic research areas - sustainable urban development, health promotion, innovative learning and intelligent industry. The Department of Building Engineering, Energy Systems and Sustainability Science at the University of Gävle is seeking a PhD student to conduct research on demand-side flexibility in industrial energy systems. You will be part of the TIES research programme ( Transforming Industrial Energy Systems for Sustainability and Resilience ), which works in collaboration with industry to develop future sustainable energy solutions.
Duties The project will develop approaches that enable Alleima in Sandviken to increase the flexibility of its electric power demand, strengthen its interaction with surrounding energy systems, and ensure efficient utilisation of available grid capacity. The research will include analysis of electricity consumption and power quality data from nearly one thousand installed power quality meters, as well as modelling of thermal processes, including the thermal inertia of the many different furnaces and heat process stages at the steel works in Sandviken. The use of industrial waste heat to optimise value exchange with surrounding energy systems will also be investigated. Alleima’s potential to act as a flexible participant in both the electricity market and ancillary services markets will be simulated, and demonstration trials may also be conducted. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Alleima, and parts of the research may be conducted at the company's site in Sandviken. The position is therefore located in either Gävle or Sandviken. Alleima is a global manufacturer of high value-added products in advanced stainless steels and special alloys, as well as solutions for industrial heating. Its fully integrated value chain, from R&D to end-product, ensures industry-leading technology, quality, sustainability and circularity. Headquartered in Sandviken, Sweden, Alleima had approximately 6,800 employees and revenues of SEK 19 billion in 80 countries in 2025. Approximately 2,500 employees are based in Sandviken. Energy use at the Sandviken industrial site amounts to nearly 1 TWh per year, of which up to 700 GWh is electricity. The working language at the industrial site is Swedish, and applicants must therefore be able to communicate in Swedish, both orally and in writing. The doctoral position includes: conducting the research project completing courses corresponding to at least 60 ECTS- credits regularly participating in faculty activities, such as seminars and meetings Third-cycle subject: Energy Systems
Qualifications To be admitted to third-cycle studies, applicants must meet both the general and specific entry requirements (Chapter 7, Section 35 of the Higher Education Ordinance). General entry requirements are met by applicants who have been awarded a second-cycle qualification, have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at second-cycle level, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements for admission to third-cycle studies in Energy Systems (the doctoral subject area) are met by applicants who hold a second-cycle qualification in Electric Power Engineering, Energy Systems, or another field deemed equivalent by the employer. For this doctoral position, documented experience and knowledge of electrical and/or heat transfer are required. Knowledge of industrial processes in general, and metallurgical processes in steel production in particular, is considered a merit. To succeed in your doctoral studies at the University of Gävle, you need to be goal-oriented in your work and have an interest in and ability to collaborate with industry. In the selection process, applicants will be assessed based on their ability to: • Work independently and take responsibility for progressing their work. • Collaborate effectively with others. • Demonstrate a professional approach. • Analyse and address complex issues. • Demonstrate an understanding of electrical power transmission and/or thermal processes, as well as the ability to simulate and model advanced technical systems. • Discuss and explain research to individuals outside their own field of expertise.
Good communication skills in both English and Swedish, spoken and written, are required. Admission and Selection Criteria To be admitted to third-cycle studies, applicants must be assessed as having the ability to benefit from the education (Chapter 7, Section 35 of the Higher Education Ordinance). Admission is based on an individual assessment. For more information about third-cycle studies and our admission and selection criteria, please visit: http://www.hig.se/forskning/forskarutbildning . Terms of Employment Following admission to third-cycle studies, the successful applicant will be offered employment as a doctoral student (Chapter 5, Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance). The position is a full-time, fixed-term employment, initially for one year, with the possibility of extension for a maximum of two years at a time. The total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time third-cycle studies. Doctoral students may, to a limited extent (maximum 20% of their working time), undertake certain duties, such as teaching and administration.
Application As an applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete when submitted.
